My name is Janna, and Illusion Poodles is the culmination of nearly a decade of learning, showing, grooming, breeding, and—above all—living with dogs.
My journey with Standard Poodles began with an appreciation for their beauty, but it quickly became something much deeper. The more I learned about the breed, the more fascinated I became by what lies beneath the coat: structure, movement, temperament, intelligence, breed type, and purpose.
Over the years, that fascination developed into a commitment to understanding not simply what makes a beautiful Poodle, but what makes a correct, sound, functional, and mentally stable one.
As a professional groomer and longtime dog person, I have spent thousands of hours with my hands on dogs.
Grooming taught me to see dogs differently. Beneath every coat is structure. You learn where shoulders are placed, how fronts and rears are assembled, how muscle develops, how a dog carries itself, and how physical construction affects comfort and movement.
The show ring took that education even further.
I chose to become actively involved in conformation because I believe that if I am going to breed Poodles, I should be willing to have the dogs I produce evaluated against the Standard of the breed. I have personally trained, groomed, conditioned, and shown my own dogs, including dogs I have bred myself.
Every trip into the ring has taught me something--whether we leave with a ribbon or simply with a better understanding of the dog standing at the end of my lead.
For me, showing has never been about only collecting titles.
It is about evaluation, preservation, education, and accountability.
Illusion Poodles did not begin with the goal of producing puppies.
It began with the goal of producing better Poodles.
My breeding decisions are made deliberately, sometimes years before a litter is ever born. I study pedigrees, structure, movement, temperament, health, strengths, weaknesses, and the qualities individual dogs may contribute to the next generation.
I believe breeding requires the ability to appreciate your dogs while still evaluating them objectively. No dog is perfect, and meaningful improvement cannot happen unless a breeder is willing to recognize both what should be preserved and what should be improved.
That philosophy influences every breeding I plan.
I want my dogs to possess beautiful breed type, but beauty alone is not enough. They should be able move correctly. They should possess intelligent, resilient, stable minds. And they should still unmistakably look, move, and behave like Poodles.
One of the things I treasure most about this journey is being personally involved with my dogs from one generation to the next.
I have had the privilege of standing in the show ring with dogs I bred, raised, groomed, trained, and conditioned myself. Watching a puppy born in my home eventually walk beside me into a conformation ring is extraordinarily meaningful.
Each generation represents years of decisions behind it. Mentors who shared their knowledge. Pedigrees studied late into the night. Dogs evaluated honestly. Breedings reconsidered. Puppies raised. Lessons learned. Successes celebrated.
And occasionally, plans change entirely because the dogs taught me something I had not anticipated.
That process is what breeding means to me.
My responsibility does not end when a breeding produces beautiful puppies. In many ways, that is when the most important work begins.
Puppies at Illusion Poodles are raised intentionally during the critical developmental weeks they spend with me. My program incorporates elements of Puppy Culture, traditional puppy-raising practices, extensive handling and exposure, grooming foundations, confidence-building experiences, and individual temperament evaluation, including Volhard temperament testing.
I pay close attention to each puppy as an individual. Some are thoughtful observers. Some immediately want to work with people. Others need a moment to understand a new situation before confidently joining in. Those differences matter.
My goal is not to simply find someone who wants a puppy. It is to understand each puppy well enough to helo create a thoughtful match between dog, temperament, lifestyle, and home.
Perhaps the greatest lesson dogs have taught me is that there is always more to learn.
I am incredibly grateful for the breeders, handlers, groomers, judges, veterinarians, exhibitors, and mentors who have shared their knowledge with me through this journey. I value people who have dedicated decades to preserving this breed, and I believe responsible breeding requires both confidence in your convictions and humility enough to continue learning.
Every dog adds something to my education. Every litter adds something. Every show adds something. And every generation gives me another opportunity to apply what I have learned to the generation that follows.
Because when you first see a beautifully presented Poodle, the coat can almost create an Illusion. But underneath the presentation must be something real.
Sound Structure.
Correct Movement.
A Beautiful Mind.
Good Health.
And Unmistakable Breed Type.
Those are the qualities I strive to preserve and strengthen through Illusion Poodles. I am enormously proud of the dogs who came before, incredibly excited about the dogs beside me today, and always thinking carefully about the generations to come.
